Since ancient times, people have believed that between heaven and earth, where the wind blows and thunder roars, there are these two gods who drive the sky, and they have been depicted in various parts of the world as the gods who govern nature. The Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) in Asakusa is officially called the Wind and Thunder Gods Gate, and sculptures of these two deities are housed on either side of the gate. The Wind and Thunder Gods, painted by Tawaraya Sotatsu, the founder of the Rimpa school of painting, have been copied by Japanese painters, including Ogata Korin, in their studies as a coveted design.
